What is it? (Including who it is for)

Literacy Software, Numeracy Software and Dyscalculia Screening for Schools | IDL (idlsgroup.com)

IDL is Literacy and Numeracy multi-sensory special educational software based on evidence informed research that is proven to improve reading, spelling and mathematics abilities for pupils with dyslexia, or dyscalculia or those who need extra within the core curriculum areas of English and mathematics. Structured online lessons support development of key skills within English and mathematics. IDL identifies areas of individual pupil’s strengths and needs.

Part of the bundle is a dyscalculia screener and animated mathematics tutorials that presents the main numeracy topics within the primary curriculum.

The Multiplication Tables Check is a revision tool that enables pupils to master their times tables.

The IDL Literacy Intervention is a speaking, computer-based multi-sensory system. Touch typing exercises, subject specific spelling exercises as well as a dyslexia screener are also available within this package. Backgrounds and text colours can also be adjusted to minimise visual stress for individual pupils.

Aim

The aim of the IDL Literacy package is to increase the reading and spelling ages of those pupils with dyslexia or moderate learning difficulties. It covers the reading process from phonological awareness to fluency.

The software includes components that improve spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

IDL Numeracy software has been developed to support pupils with dyscalculia or those with mathematics difficulties. It contains a wide range of resources to support learners, a set of maths interactive puzzles and lessons based on the mathematical principles of number bonds, counting, sequencing, patterns, number value, place value and arithmetic.

Both packages have also impacted positively upon the confidence and self-esteem of individual pupils.

Age range

IDL Numeracy is designed to support the National Curriculum for KS1 & KS2. This will help those students in Secondary Schools who are attaining at this level.

IDL Literacy is designed to support both primary (from Year 2 onwards) and secondary school learners.

How delivered (Including staff, frequency, duration, and training required)

Pupils can work independently or with little supervision, whilst teachers can track and monitor progress. It allows for larger targeted intervention groups, which is particularly appropriate for Secondary School settings who have limited key adult support available.

IDL can be used for the purposes of homework or exam practice. Information regarding free trials and access to training is available on IDL’s website (see the website link above).

It is recommended that it is used by a pupil for a minimum of one hour per week. For maximum impact key adults are advised to follow the Education Endowment Foundation’s key features for an effective intervention (at least 3 times per week).

Resources

IDL software can be used from home and or school with a computer or tablet. The Cloud is used to store pupil’s data and progress so they can pick up where they finished during their previous session. For an annual administrative fee, schools can purchase an unlimited user licence to use with as many learners on as many devices as they require. Apps have been designed for iPads/tablets and can be used on any device with internet connection.

Suggested criteria for baseline information and monitoring impact:

An initial assessment determines where a pupil starts. A pupil can then be retested at any time (usually once per term) for progress to be measured and recorded. Key adults are then able to make comparisons with the assessment data gathered to make informed judgements regarding the impact evidenced for each pupil.
